The EMA is pleased to inform that the European Commission has launched a call for evidence for cancer prevention – action to promote vaccination against cancer-causing viruses.
Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan (the ‘Cancer Plan’) is a key priority of the Commission in the area of public health and a cornerstone of the European Health Union. Together with the Horizon Europe Cancer Mission, it is the EU’s response to the increasing number of cancer cases and deaths across the EU population.
As a flagship initiative of the Cancer Plan, the Commission will support EU Member States’ efforts to extend routine vaccination of girls and boys against Human papillomaviruses (HPV) to eliminate cervical cancer and other cancers caused by those viruses. The goal set in the Cancer Plan is to vaccinate at least 90% of the EU target population of girls and to significantly increase the vaccination of boys by 2030. In the Cancer Plan, the Commission also commits to helping ensure access to vaccination against Hepatitis B virus (HBV), with a view to increasing vaccination uptake. The Commission will therefore propose a Council Recommendation on vaccine-preventable cancers to help EU Member States address the cancer risks linked to HPV and HBV infections.
This initiative is included in the 2023 Commission work progamme under the Commission priority ‘Promoting our European Way of Life’ as part of a prevention package, which also includes a revised proposal for a Council Recommendation on smoke-free environments.
