Professor Sam Salek, recipient of the Royal Colleges of Physicians Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine President’s Medal, reflects on a career defined by impact, education, and mentoring the next generation.
“The key element, in terms of receiving such an award… it’s a demonstration to the younger people, the young researchers,… to know that… their effort ultimately will be recognized,” he shared. Over four decades, he has trained physicians who now occupy senior positions worldwide, describing this as a gratification “that really cannot be exchanged with anything else.”
Perhaps it’s the opportunity he’s had to engage with many brilliant minds that led him to this insight: “The reflection that I have, and often, you know, when you’re sitting around the table with friends and colleagues, perhaps even over a bottle of wine, the question that often is asked is, you know, if you had the chance again, would you do anything differently in your life? And, I think I’m one of those privileged people that my answer is always, I wouldn’t change a thing.”
Professor Salek emphasizes the importance of structured, hands-on education: “Everyone who have joined the discipline… really need to be trained for this new discipline. It’s not something that you can learn on your own.” He highlights the GMDP Academy as a way to give students a comprehensive experience “from molecule to marketplace.”
He also points to the value of international collaboration, from a decade-long program with a German university to an integrated master’s undergraduate program in regulatory science at the University of Hertfordshire—both challenging, both deeply rewarding.
His advice to aspiring professionals: “Don’t give up your dream. Everyone is capable of putting their mind to what they believe in, and finally… to achieve… their capabilities.”
