Systolic hypertension poses a significant threat as the primary risk factor for preventable deaths, accounting for approximately one-fifth of global fatalities, totaling around 11 million in 2019. This easily treatable condition, linked to various health issues such as ischaemic stroke, intracerebral haemorrhage, cerebral small vessel disease, and dementia, has seen a concerning doubling of affected adults since 1990, reaching 1.3 billion in 2019. Despite widespread knowledge about diagnosis and effective, affordable antihypertensive drugs, only half of those with hypertension are aware of their condition, and control is achieved in only a fifth of cases. This situation is more dire in low and middle-income countries, where less than 5% of individuals with high blood pressure have it under control, particularly in most African nations.

Responding to this urgent health crisis, the World Health Organization (WHO) released its inaugural report on hypertension on September 16, 2023. Titled “The Global Report on Hypertension: The Race Against a Silent Killer,” the report underscores hypertension as both a global health concern and a pressing public health challenge. It puts forth practical recommendations for countries to address this issue. The WHO report offers a comprehensive overview of the global burden of hypertension, emphasizing how controlling it aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, specifically target 3.4, which aims to reduce premature deaths from noncommunicable diseases by one-third by 2030.

Furthermore, the report delves into the specific public health challenges posed by hypertension within individual countries. Despite the availability of cost-effective blood pressure medications, uncontrolled hypertension still imposes substantial financial burdens on individuals, their families, and national health systems. The WHO report serves as a crucial resource, urging countries to take decisive action in the face of this silent killer and emphasizing the need for a coordinated global response to combat the escalating prevalence of hypertension.
