The IFAPP Academy has inaugurated a Global Fellowship of experts and those experienced in the development of medicines with the aim to advance the disciplines involved in pharmaceutical medicine/medicines development to gain competence and professional identity amongst their membership. In 2020, 117 individuals from 24 countries received the Global Fellows in Medicines Development (GFMD) award.
The Academy aims to build on this GFMD foundation, in order to enhance the momentum gained to establish the aims and principles of the Fellowship. Under its auspices, the Academy will gather further Global Fellows and contribute to continuing efforts to foster pharmaceutical medicine/medicines development as a distinct profession, aimed at developing appropriate medicines to fulfill medical needs and bring them to benefit patients in a timely manner in their respective communities and societies.
The Fellowship will aim to accomplish its purpose under the auspices of the Academy through:
A. providing, communicating and achieving recognition of the value of disciplines involved in medicines development / pharmaceutical medicine in bringing better medicines from concept to patient;
B. being a beacon of education and training for medicines development professions;
C. developing collaborations and partnerships necessary to consolidate the professions.
D. promoting the contribution professionals can make with a career in medicines
development and their value role in health care, and
E. fostering professional identity and sense of purpose amongst those involved in
pharmaceutical medicine/medicines development.
It is hoped that Global Fellows will reciprocate this recognition of their achievements and valued contributions to medicines development by making a commitment to the Fellowship’s 5C engagement strategy to advance pharmaceutical medicine/medicines development by:
• Championing pharmaceutical medicine/medicines development as an
established profession;
• Communicating awareness of the intrinsic value of this professional GFMD
Award;
• Connecting with peers and others to identify and nominate the next Global
Fellows;
• Cultivating professional bodies and associations in pharmaceutical medicine /
medicines development through membership or affiliation, and support of their
activities;
• Collaborating with / contributing to the Academy’s own programmes to raise
awareness of current issues and opportunities in medicines development
arena.
New Fellows will be nominated by a Global Fellow in recognition of their distinguished contribution to the sciences, in the field of pharmaceutical medicine/medicines development and must complete and submit an evidence-based application to fulfill a notified scoring threshold requirement of academic and vocational qualifications and certifications, and professional achievement and standing in medical, scientific or public/societal domains. Applications will be adjudicated by an Academy panel established for the purpose. The IFAPP Academy welcomes its Global Fellows and seeks to meet their requests and needs. It welcomes all enquiries on nominating new Global Fellows and on the submission of their applications for adjudication for admission and the GFMD Award.
